The Snake
The snake story. I know some of you may have heard this, but well, not everyone has, and it's worth retelling anyway. The other day, I'm at preschool, Hayes is napping, mom is watching her "stories" as dad calls them. She hears Lefty kind of freak out on the back porch. Mom goes out to find Lefty eye to eye with a snake. No snake is welcome where my mom is concerned, so she freaks out, gets Lefty inside and calls Aunt Shannon. Smart move, Mom, very helpful. Freaking out while Aunt Shannon is trying to get the latest on Jon and Kate, Mom gets a broom, to try and brush it away. By this time it has gone in and out of the water table, through some trucks, and is relaxing in the drawer of my tool chest. Great, just great. Mom is armed, ready to tap, ever so lightly, boom! Somethign goes flying! Mom freaks, forgets the sliding glass door is behind her, almost goes through it, falls inside, closes the door and sees that the snake never moved an inch. "So, what's going on with Jon and this teacher?" Aunt Shannon, focus. Mom gets off the phone once she has calmed a minute to call the base game warden. Who knew? Don't you think she's being a bit dramatic?Nope. Here's what he found. A Red Racer or Coach Whip. Non-poisonous. VERY aggressive. Bit the warden a bunch (hence the gloves) and apparently tears the skin when it bites. Nice.
The story doesn't end there. Since that is ALL our mother is talking about for two day, we decide that we'd like to see it. She was nice enough to take us to the game warden's place where they were keeping it for a week to show some classes and then release it back into the "wilderness". Do you think it will find its way back to my trucks?
On a calmer note, there were also some really cool bones from a beached whale (which Biz and my mom saw on the beach in 03!), some snake skins, bird wings, a bear hide and other cool stuff there, too.
